About Maps to Nowhere

An original video series by Surfline x O'Neill. Watch the trailer here.

How far would you go to surf perfect waves with no-one around? Matt Rode is a surfer and journalist who’s dedicated his life to this dream. He’s gone where very few surfers have gone before him, logging his findings in his hand-written “sacred scrolls,” which he’d never shared with anyone…until now. Last year, Matt decided to help guide some of the world’s best surfers to a handful of these ultra-special yet wildly fickle waves, crossing his fingers that he (along with Surfline’s ace forecast team) had analyzed the charts well enough to find them at their good to epic best. The result? Four far-flung adventures, some excellent pitfalls, countless tubes, many fish, some barbecues and so much more.

Note: “Maps to Nowhere” is a series about the lengths surfers will go to surf perfect, empty waves. The spots you’re about to see are not new discoveries — but they are (nearly) perfect, and they are empty. The locations are not disclosed because our belief is that the journey is at least half the fun — and sometimes, over half of the travel time. We thank the many local community members that helped make our adventures a success.
